How Are You, Really?

“How are you?” might be the question we answer most without thinking. “Good.” “Fine.” “Busy, but good.” This World Mental Health Day, Saturday, October 10, we’re asking you to answer honestly and ask it like you mean it.

If you’re a parent or caregiver, you’re tracking the appointments, the school forms, the light bill, and what’s for dinner. Somewhere at the very bottom of that list is you, and most days you never get that far down.

Taking care of your mental health doesn’t have to mean a spa day or an hour of meditation. Sometimes it’s sitting in the car for five quiet minutes before you walk into the house. It’s texting the friend who always makes you laugh, saying no to one thing this week, or going to bed instead of scrolling. None of it fixes everything. These are small moves, and small moves add up.

Our kids carry more than they let on, too. School pressure, group chats that never shut off, and friendships that change overnight all pile up. Most kids won’t say “I’m struggling.” It shows up sideways, as moodiness, trouble sleeping, or a stomachache every school morning. You don’t need a perfect speech. Talk side by side in the car or while cooking. Ask, “What was the best and worst part of today?” instead of “How was school?” Listen before you fix it, and if they shut down, try again tomorrow.

A lot of us grew up hearing that needing help means you’re weak. We want to push back on that. Talking to a counselor is no different from seeing a doctor for a sprained ankle. If you or someone in your home is in crisis, call or text 988 any time. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

Mental wellness is a big part of what we do. Through workshops and events, we help families build resilience and connect with behavioral health resources. Not sure where to start? Call (667) 400-0231 or email info@thenextmovefoundation.org.

So this week, ask somebody how they’re doing and actually wait for the answer. Ask your kids. Ask your neighbor. Ask the friend who always seems to have it all together. And when someone asks you, give them the real answer too. You might be surprised how many people were just waiting for someone to go first.
